The crude essential oil distilled from the wood of camphor trees contains 35 to 40% camphor along with the potentially carcinogenic constituent safrol. Crude camphor oil is re-distilled to remove the safrol and produce white camphor. White is the grade preferred in scenting detergents, soaps, disinfectants, deodorants, room sprays and other household products. Aromatherapy benefits: clarifying, energizing, purifying. A native of Formosa (Taiwan) , China and Japan the tree can often grow as old as a thousand years. To produce oil it must be at least 50 years old. Camphor oil is extracted by steam from the the chipped wood, root stumps and branches. It is then rectified under vacuum and filter pressed. The main chemical components are: Cineol, Camphor, Borneol, Camphene, Menthol, Borneol, Pinene, and Dipentene. Camphor oil is a powerful oil and should be used with care. Overdosing can cause convulsions and vomiting. Pregnant women or persons suffering from epilepsy and asthma should not use it. Camphor oil can be used in the treatment of nervous depression, acne, inflammation, arthritis, muscular aches and pains, sprains, rheumatism, bronchitis, coughs, colds, fever, flu and infectious diseases. Since this oil can be highly toxic, it should NEVER be used in aromatherapy massage, but could be used in vapor therapy to ease respiratory problems. In some cases it can also be used in compresses. Camphor oil is a balancing oil, it can sedate the nerves and uplift apathy. It can help with feeling cold and reduces inflammation and is used with great effect to repel insects such as flies and moths. It also has a positive effect in colds and flu, infectious diseases, bronchitis, coughs, and can assist with muscular pains, rheumatism, sprains, arthritis etc. In vapor therapy Camphor oil can be used for the heart, lungs and circulation. Also for nervous diseases and for convalescence. For bruises and sprains cold compresses are effective. Although essential oils in general blend well together, Camphor oil blends particularly well with the Basil, Cajuput, Chamomile, Lavender and Melissa. Essential and resin oils are volatile, fragrant materials extracted from the root, bark, wood, seed, fruit, leaf or flower of a single plant. Essential oils contain the odor, taste and medicinal properties of the plant itself, but in very concentrated form, with no base oil, alcohol, water or dilutants added. Steam distillation and cold pressing are used to extract the essential oil from the plant.
